Homeschooling Chapter 5: The Student Becomes the Teacher

In Sasspoint Village, comprehension had become contagious. One afternoon, young Elijah – age nine, missing two front teeth – stood on a milk crate and taught his cousins how to find the main idea.

He used a cereal box as his “text.” He used a marker cap as his “pointer.” He used his voice like he’d been doing this for years.

When his aunt asked where he learned all that, he shrugged and said, “At the table. That’s where the smart stuff happens.”

No one corrected him. They were too busy taking notes.
