The evening light stretched across Palm Walk, quiet and undisturbed.
Aziza sat with her phone in hand, her expression composed—but not settled.
“I asked God,” she said, almost to herself.
“And He answered.”
Nia glanced at her, then nodded once.
“That should be the end of it.”
Aziza didn’t respond immediately.
Because it should have been.
“I hear what He’s saying,” Aziza continued,
“but, I don’t see why it has to be that way.”
Nia studied her for a moment.
Not critically.
Just clearly.
“Say that again,” she said.
Aziza hesitated… then repeated it, slower this time.
“I don’t see why it has to be that way.”
The words sounded different now.
Less like confusion.
More like an evaluation.
Nia leaned back slightly.
“That’s not a question,” she said.
“That’s a review.”
Silence.
Aziza looked down at her phone again.
The answer was still there.
Unchanged.
Unedited.
Unmoved by her opinion of it.
“I asked…” Aziza said quietly,
“…but I expected to weigh the answer.”
Nia nodded.
“That’s the presumption,” she said.
“To believe His reply requires your approval.”
That landed without resistance.
Aziza exhaled slowly.
No frustration.
No defense.
Just recognition.
“…So, the issue isn’t that He didn’t answer,” she said.
“It’s that I answered back… as if I had authority.”
Nia didn’t add anything else.
She didn’t need to.
There once was a woman who prayed,
Then measured the answer God gave.
“I asked for Your will—
But it must fit mine still…”
Yet God is not judged—He is the Judge.
Isaiah 45:11 (ESV)
“Thus says the Lord… Will you command me concerning my children and the work of my hands?”
