Dove Eyes Chapter 3 – Whispers in the Parking Lot

For a while, their conversations were light and easy – sideline chats about the kids, the weather, the chaos of weekend traffic. He found himself looking forward to those moments more than he cared to admit.

But then came the whispers.

It was after practice one evening, when a couple of friends lingered near the parking lot. Their voices dropped low, but not low enough.

She’s been through a divorce, you know. Six kids. Can you imagine?”

The words hit him harder than he expected. Six children. She had a whole life already lived, a history heavy with responsibility. He drove home that night with the steering wheel gripped tight, his mind racing.

This wasn’t what he had prayed for. He had asked for dove eyes, yes – but he had imagined them in a woman unburdened, someone who could start fresh with him, not someone carrying the weight of six souls.

And yet…he couldn’t shake the memory of her honesty, the way she listened without judgment, the quiet strength in her laughter. She was everything he had asked God for in character, in spirit, in heart.

Still, fear won.

He pulled back. Stopped lingering after games. Let conversations trail off. He told himself it was wisdom, discernment, self-protection. But deep down, he knew it was doubt-doubt that God’s answer could look so different from his expectation.
